HOURS & Exhibits
WE ARE CURRENTLY CLOSED FOR RENOVATIONS TO OUR EXHIBITS AND RAILCARS.
However, if you catch one of our volunteers working at the site on a weekend, we’ll be happy to show you around!
EXHIBITS
There are over two dozen pieces of historic railroad equipment displayed at the Port Jervis Railroad Museum. Our site is open to the public, and the exterior of all of our equipment is available for viewing at all times.
HOURS
The interior exhibits in several of our railcars (listed below) are typically open on weekends from mid-May through mid-October. Our exhibits are currently undergoing renovations; the 2026 opening schedule will be released when renovations are complete! The railcars listed below, as well as additional equipment, may be open by chance if our volunteers are working on site.
Admission
While entry to the site, the railcars, and all on-site activities are FREE, donations are strongly encouraged to support our ongoing preservation efforts.
Private Tours
If you are interested in scheduling a private tour of our exhibits, or a tour of any of the railroad equipment that is not listed below, please email us at info@toyx.org. One of our volunteers will be happy to coordinate access for you or your group.
Museum Boxcar
This insulated boxcar, built in 1973 to carry fresh fruit, has been remodeled inside to house our comprehensive exhibit covering the history of railroading around the Port Jervis area from the 1840s to present. Featured are artifacts, maps, documents, and photographs covering local operations by the Erie Railroad and New York, Ontario & Western Railway, including the sprawling Erie shop complex that once occupied our historic site.
Theater Boxcar
This one-of-a-kind boxcar, built in 1965 to carry bottled beer, was modified in 1992 as a mobile theater to show railroad safety films. The on-board theater now shows a specially-produced 20-minute film of Port Jervis railroad history, while the other end of the car houses rotating special exhibits covering more in-depth histories of specific topics in Port Jervis railroading history. This boxcar also houses our gift shop.
Chessie Caboose
Our fully operable Chessie System caboose was built in 1980 and has been almost fully restored inside. Visitors to the site are welcome to come aboard and experience this classic part of American railroading, where the conductor would sit at the rear of the train to do his paperwork and watch over the train for defects or problems.
Conrail Caboose
Our fully operable Conrail caboose was built in 1970 and once operated through Port Jervis. Since the railroad removed most of the original interior during this car’s 50 years of service, this car now serves as additional space for specialty or temporary exhibits and for special events. It currently contains a special exhibit on KarTrak ACI labels.
Dining Car
(CURRENTLY OFF-SITE FOR RENOVATIONS)
Our original 1949 Lackawanna Railroad dining car is a “restaurant on wheels,” serving some of the finest food available at a time when the quality of the meals gave one railroad an edge over its competitors. This fully-restored and operational car is where our skilled volunteers prepare original 1930s through 1960s railroad recipes during our special on-board dinner events.
